Another Way to Obtain Disability Benefits
Social Security Disability (SSD) is not the only federal benefits program available to disabled people. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides benefits for disabled people who are in financial need, but who either do not qualify for SSD or who receive monthly SSD payments of less than $760 a month.
At The Law Offices of Kenneth Hiller, PLLC, we help clients in Pittsburgh, Erie and across western Pennsylvania who need to apply for SSI benefits. Our practice is dedicated to helping disabled people obtain much-needed benefits, whether through the SSD program or the SSI program. If you are unable to work because of age, a physical impairment or a mental impairment, we are ready to sit down with you, explain your options and do everything we can to help you obtain the benefits you need.
To schedule your free initial consultation with an experienced Pittsburgh Supplemental Security Income attorney, please call 716-213-6378 or toll free 888-322-9399. You can also contact our law firm online.
SSI Is a Need-Based Program
There are two basic requirements to qualify for SSI:
- You must be totally disabled under the Social Security Administration's definition.
- You must have little to no income or assets.
Importantly, you do not have to have paid Social Security taxes in order to qualify for SSI. Beyond the qualifications, the rest of the SSI process is largely similar to the SSD process:
- The disability criteria are the same (except in cases involving children's SSI benefits).
- The application timeline is the same.
- Appealing denied claims is the same.
